Here is the Race To A Million Teams Update… what’s going on in the third investment cycle? Where are the teams at with the totals on the leaderboard? What are the teams planning next? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this video update.
Welcome to this video segment of Race To A Million with a Team Genie member business profile. Today we’re interviewing Michael Koehn, from Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Centre. A very “Nice Person Who Has Finished First” right from our very own community. Today he’s going to tell us a little about himself, his company and some of the secrets of his success!
Welcome back everyone to Race To A Million. As the sign says – Nice People Can Finish First – and we’re here today talking to Mike Koehn from Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Center. So, Michael, you’re definitely one of the nice guys who have finished first in the community. Why did you decide to help create Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Center? I don’t know many kids who say they want to become a pain management specialist when they grow up.
Michael Koehn:
Well you know Pete, strangely enough; I was one of those kids. You know, going back to my early days, my mother always said, “you know when you were eight, you said that you wanted to be a therapist”. You know, I’ve got to believe her but I’ll admit it’s a bit unusual. I have to tell you though, it comes from a lifelong interest in people, and really what’s the heart of all of pain management? People.
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
Mike, what’s your background with regards to this? How did you get into this and what kind of training do you have?
Michael Koehn:
Basically, in order to work in pain management therapy you need to have quite an eclectic background these days. So, I have a combination of formal training in psychology. I particularly work in clinical counseling. That’s my expertise but I also have an interest in all areas of medicine and an interdisciplinary approach. So, basically that means, I learn a little from here and a little bit from there… formal study, practical application and a little of everything in between.
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
What exactly is Pain Management?
Michael Koehn:
This field has evolved a lot. In the past one might have thought that pain management was about an injection or some type of medication. These days pain management has evolved into an entire field unto itself.
Basically, to give you a bit of a rundown on it, pain management is dealing with the interaction between the mind, the body and symptomotogy that impacts a person’s ability to function. So, to say that very simply, pain is felt in the mind as well as in the body and it has impacts in a person’s life. And, so tying all of these factors together to come up with a plan to assist someone to have better function is really the name of the game these days. To do that, it takes working together as a team, very much involving the individual who is suffering as an integral part of that team.
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
What makes the Welcome Back Centre so unique?
Michael Koehn:
Basically, these days as I mentioned, the field is evolving. The Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Centre is really one of the new centres that’s on the cutting edge of this type of work. What that means is basically you assemble a team of like-minded individuals who are willing to work together, involve the patient and the care, and work with a diverse set of skills and abilities, in order to provide the best outcome.
So, traditionally, you would see a single practitioner. You have this person doing the very best to help an individual but being alone on an island and having the patient being very much a passive participate in this process. These days we have a whole group of talented individuals, working as a team. So the Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Centre brings together some of the most wonderful technologies in terms of medical imaging technology, diagnostic imaging and as well as the expertise and skill sets of the practitioners that are involved in the system. And, we are combining that with quite a revolutionary attitude. We’re bringing together a very inclusionary model and having people working together for the best outcome.
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
So, being a first of a kind system how did you figure out or determine is there was a market for this type of service from the Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Center?
Michael Koehn:
What we came up with was three people sitting down together. We had a counselor, an anesthesiologist and a neurosurgeon sitting there asking, “what’s going on in the health care system right now based on our own experience?” We were listening to patients, listening to clients, listening to other professionals in the field… We were asking ourselves, “what are the major concerns? What’s going wrong in the system right now?” … as well as… “what’s going right?”
We found that the success stories came from collaboration and cooperation and communication. And similarly, the problems came from a breakdown in those exact same areas. So, the very foundation of the Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Centre was to say what can we do to make great health care outcomes?
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
So Mike, marking a service like this has to be a whole lot different than selling snow tires or garden hoses. What are the factors that come into play when you’re looking at marketing Welcome Back?
Michael Koehn:
When it comes down to getting the message across to individuals that are in pain, people who are suffering, it starts off by focusing really where the inputs are into the system. So, for example, individuals who are in pain – what type of life are they leading? These are individuals who quite often have a life full of doctor appointments, various therapies that they are involved in, they may have many trips to the hospital, they may have other family members that they are spending a lot of time with and interacting with. So, in order for us to get our message through to the individuals that are involved in that system we focus on who is impacted.
We focus on the physicians. We focus on the insurance companies and the people that are trying to help the individuals. We focus on all of the medical and paramedical providers that are frustrated and struggling to be able to provide great care when they are an individual practitioner. In order to get the message across it’s first of all about finding who’s involved rather than broadcasting a message generally out which is helpful as well but it’s really about having a dialogue and sitting down and taking the time to listen.
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
As you know, our slogan at the Race To A Million is “Nice People Can Finish First.” You’re definitely one of the people that stand out in our community who has actually done that. You’ve been successful in business and kept your integrity. How do you do it? What’s your secret?
Michael Koehn:
If I had a secret, something I could share with you, the first thing as a nice person I would do is share it. But, I’ve got to tell you; right now I’m very much a work in progress. All I can tell you is this. I’m surrounded by wonderful people, very knowledgeable individuals and I’m blessed to have the ability to learn from those people every day. It’s very simple. Come with an attitude of learning, of being open and recognizing that everybody has something to teach you. No matter how big or how small, it doesn’t matter. What it is all about is growing, learning, and developing new skills. Similarly it’s also about sharing what you have, openly and freely, with those that wish to learn. So in an environment of mutual understanding, caring and communication all kinds of wonderful things can happen. That’s the spirit of the Race to a Million and that’s the spirit of the Welcome Back Centre.
Peter Cameron-Inglis:
There you have it everybody, Mike Koehn, from Team Genie representing the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Center – one of the nice guys who have definitely finished first!

Local Businessman Michael Koehn is offering his spare time for sale in support of the Make-A-Wish® Foundation and Team Genie. Michael is the co-founder of geeks2go computer support services and presently a founder of the Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management Centre. These days he helps people suffering with chronic pain and disability to restore function and regain their quality of life. He uses the latest technology in upright MRI and 3D fluoroscopy along with an inter-disciplinary medical team to diagnose and treat complex pain conditions.
Just as Michael is an expert in pain management he is also one of Kamloops’ foremost experts in both business computer networks and personal computer support services. This guy is good!
Usually people would pay $200 an hour for his time but he is offering to come to your home or business (in his spare time) to support you with your computer technology needs for $100/hour with half of the proceeds going directly to granting wishes for children with life threatening illnesses. The other half goes to support Team Genie, Michael’s MasterMind group in the Race To A Million Contest.
Michael is expecting his first child in 3 months and his goal is to pledge the cost of a wish (about $6000) in the name of his son or daughter. Michael’s hope is that his child will come into this world sharing hope, strength, and joy with kids in need.
Please help Michael to grant a wish by booking him to provide your support needs.
